USA California State University Bakersfield Scholarship in Teaching Program 2010

USA California State University Bakersfield Scholarship in Teaching Program 2010

The purpose of this Operations Memo is to provide an update on the status of the California Student Aid Commission's (Commission) Assumption Program of Loans for Education (APLE). APLE is a state-funded, competitive teacher incentive program designed to encourage outstanding students to become teachers and serve in areas within California where there is an identified critical teacher shortage.

Student are advised that the Assumption Program of Loans for Education (APLE), a State program designed for students who are entering the teaching profession, enables students who are enrolled in a program leading to an initial teaching credential, to have educational loans assumed by the California Student Aid Commission.

The basic APLE program assumes up to $11,000 in educational loans in association with four consecutive years of fulltime teaching in a designated teacher shortage field or eligible California K-12 public school.
APLE participants who teach in mathematics, science, or special education in California public schools ranked in the lowest 60 percentile of API, may receive both the basic $11,000 and up to $1,000 of additional loan assumption during each of four years. Another $1,000 of benefits may be received in each of the four years by individuals teaching mathematics, science or special education in a school ranked in the lowest 20 percentile of the State's API, resulting in a maximum of $19,000 in loan assumption benefits.

The APLE program will assume educational loans that were incurred to meet the costs associated with obtaining a baccalaureate degree or an initial teaching credential.

If you have received an educational loan, and plan to teach in a shortage field and/or in a school that qualifies as a result of serving high need populations, you are encouraged to apply. There are a substantial number of APLE allocations still available, and if you are eligible you will have an excellent chance of obtaining one.

Synthetic Biology of Multicellular Systems in University of Aberdeen Foresterhill - PhD Scholarship 2010

Synthetic Biology of Multicellular Systems in University of Aberdeen Foresterhill

PhD Scholarship 2010

PhD studentship, funded by the Institute of Medical Sciences and supervised by Dr Yasushi Saka, is available for studying synthetic biology of multicellular systems. Genetically identical cells in the same physiological condition can show significant variation in gene expression profile and their behaviour.

One way to reduce the variability among cells is the cell-cell communication by diffusible factors in extracellular space. Examples of cell-cell communication include the so-called community effect in animal development. The community effect is an interaction among a group of many nearby precursor cells, and necessary for them to maintain tissue-specific gene expression and differentiate in a coordinated manner.
Objective: The objective of this project is to elucidate how a community effect affects cell's behaviour and how cells process external signals and produce coordinated output response as a cell population. We approach this problem by constructing and analysing synthetic gene networks in yeast S.cerevisiae that incorporate an artificial cell-cell communication.
The potential PhD candidate will collaborate with people from other disciplines including physics and computer sciences, and learn how to integrate theoretical/mathematical analyses and experimental results that is central to the project.

Eligibility: Candidates should have (or expect to achieve) a First Class or 2.1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject. ?
