Those of other Graduate courses must have minimum 55% marks (45% for SC/ST) in Graduation computed as average of marks of all subjects in which candidate had appeared (excluding optional subjects). Those graduating in 2010 can also apply provided they have at least 55% marks (45% for SC/ST) at the time of applying. They must submit mark sheets by 31st October 2010.

Those who have acquired qualifications through correspondence or distance learning Programmes are eligible only if they acquired such qualifications as working professional and have passed the Programme. In addition, applicant should have Verbal Percentile of at lesat 40 (25 for SC/ST) and total Percentile of at least 40 (25 for SC/ST) in CAT 2009.Provisional selection will be based on Total percentile in CAT 2009.

Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB), an institution of education, training & research, established by the Dept. of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, under the auspices of UNESCO has invited applications for the RCB Young Investigator (RCB-YI) awards from young scientists below the age of 35 years, to work in the areas related (but not limited) to Structural, Systems and Synthetic Biology, Tissue Engineering, Analysis of complex diseases for identification of intervention points and Development of knowledge-based drug discovery strategies, under the mentorship of senior faculty of RCB.

Those likely to complete their Ph D programme in the next 3 months are also eligible to apply. The Award shall be initially for three years. The award carries a consolidated stipend of Rs. 40,000/-per month. The awardee shall not be entitled to draw any other fellowship or salary.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund (JNMF) has invited applications from Indian Nationals and Nationals of other Asian Countries for the award of Scholarships of two years duration, commencing January 2011, for Ph.D studies in India.

A candidate may apply for scholarship in any one of the following areas of specialization:
(i) Science and Technology as an integral component of economic and social activity, including the Philosophy of Science (ii) Comparative Studies in Religion and Culture (iii) International Relations and Constitutional Studies (iv) Indian History, Civilization and Culture (v) Interface of Social Change and Economic Development (vi) Environmental Ecology and Sustainable Development (vii) Studies in the life and works of Jawaharlal Nehru.

Applicant should hold a first Class (minimum 60% marks) Postgraduate Degree, should not be above 35 years of age, should be a full-time Ph.D. Scholar, already registered/admitted for Ph.D Degree with a University/Institution in India approved by the Government in a subject in one of the areas of specialization listed above.
Those who have applied for registration and have not yet been registered are not eligible to apply.

Duration of the scholarship is two years. The Scholarship carries maintenance allowance including Tuition fee @ Rs.9,000/- per month, annual contingent expenses worth Rs. 12,000/- for study tours within India, books, stationery, thesis costs, etc and Sleeper Class Train fare from the place of residence or study in India for interview with the Selection Board.

Admissions will be made on the basis of 'BITS Admission Test-2010' (BITSAT-2010), a Computer based Online Test.

Those admitted to M.Sc (Hons) Programmes are given an option to work for a second Degree for one of the B.E. (Hons)/B.Pharm(Hons) Programmes under the Dual Degree scheme, assignment being made by competition on their performance at BITS at the end of first year, separately in Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad campuses. Under this scheme, a student normally requires five years to complete both the Degrees and is awarded both the Degrees, namely M.Sc.(Hons.) and B.E.(Hons.)/B.Pharm.(Hons.)

Eligibility: Applicants for admission to any of the Integrated First Degree Programmes, should have passed the 12th examination of 10+2 system from a recognized Central/State Board or equivalent, with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics securing a minimum aggregate of 80% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics together, with at least 60% marks in each of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics and should have adequate proficiency in English. Only those appearing for 12th examination in 2010 or who have passed 12th Examination in 2009 are eligible to appear for BITSAT-2010. If a candidate has taken more than one attempt in 12th Class/equivalent, only the latest performance is considered, provided this attempt has been for the full component of subjects/courses prescribed. Those who have passed 12th examination in 2008 or earlier are not eligible to appear for BITSAT-2010. Students who are presently studying in BITS at any of its campuses are not eligible to appear in BITSAT-2010.Admissions will be made purely on merit, based on the score obtained in BITSAT-2010.

Direct Admission to Board Toppers: First rank holders of all Central and State Boards in India for 2010 will be given direct admission to Programme of their choice, irrespective of their BITSAT-2010 score as per the eligibility criteria. Details about this scheme will be available at BITS website by 20th May, 2010.

Applications for BITSAT : Application can be submitted online at http://www.bitsadmission.com. A print out of the filled form has to be taken. The completed application form along with the prescribed fees of Rs. 1000/- (Rs. 500/- for female candidates) paid as per the details for payment of fees available at the website, should be sent to Admissions Officer, BITS, Pilani, Rajasthan-333 031.

Scheme of BITSAT: In BITSAT, the 'Computer Based Online test', the candidate sits in front of a computer at the Examination Centre. Questions are presented on the computer monitor. The candidate has to answers the questions on the computer through the use of keyboard or mouse. Each computer is connected to a server, which prepares the question set and delivers it to the candidate on the computer.

BITSAT-2010 will be held between 10th May 2010 and 10th June 2010, at Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad City, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Hyderabad Campus of BITS, Chandigarh, Chennai, Bhubaneswar, Delhi, Gurgaon, Coimbatore, Indore, Kolkatta, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Noida, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Gwalior. Applicant can choose the Center, Day and Time of his/her convenience to take the test. Test center allotment and announcement to candidates will be made by the 15th of February, 2010.Candidates are to reserve Test dates between 18th February, 2010 and 10th March, 2010. Hall tickets with instructions have to be downloaded from the website during 10th April, 2010 to 30th April, 2010.

BITSAT-2010 will be conducted on the basis of NCERT syllabus for 11th and 12th classes. The detailed syllabus is available at the website. Sample test will be made available to the registered candidates at the BITS website on which he/she can practice as many times as desired.

BITSAT-2010 will be of 3-hour duration (without break) and will consist of 150 objective type (multiple choice questions) in four parts, namely Physics (Part I-40 questions), Chemistry (Part II-40 questions), English Proficiency (15 questions) and Logical Reasoning (10 questions) (Part III) and Mathematics (Part IV-45 questions). Each question will have four answers, of which only one will be correct. Each correct answer fetches 3 marks, while each incorrect answer has a penalty of 1 mark (-1mark). No marks are awarded for questions not attempted. Candidate can skip a question.

But the computer will not allow the candidate to choose more than one option as correct answer. There is no time limit for individual parts of the test. The candidate can go back and change any of his/her answers among the 150 questions. If a candidate answers all the 150 questions, without skipping any question, the candidate will have an option of attempting 12 extra questions, if there is still time left. These extra questions will be from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics only, with four questions from each part. Once the candidate has opted for extra questions, he/she cannot go back for correction of any of the 150 questions answered earlier.

At the completion of the test, the computer will announce the result to the candidate in terms of number of total correct answers and wrong answers, with the score. The candidate can also check and print the score report at the BITS website after all the tests are completed. No student will be allowed to repeat the test in the same year.

Procedure for Applying for admission: All candidates who have appeared in BITSAT-2010 and are interested in admission will be required to submit Admission application with 12th marks and preferences to different degree programmes offered, on or before 30th June, 2010.

The prescribed application form for admission, the detailed application procedure and the final list of Degree Programmes offered will be available at the BITS website, by 20th May 2010. In addition to applying for and appearing in BITSAT-2010 now, candidates have to also apply for admission to BITS giving details of their 12th marks and preferences to different degree Programmes offered, then. Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), in collaboration with PGIMER, Chandigarh will hold a National Level Examination at Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata  Mumbai, Guwahati and Hyderabad on July 18th, 2010 (Sunday), for the award of Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) for Indian Nationals. 

A total of 150 Fellowships would be awarded of which, 120 will be in Life Sciences stream (like Microbiology, Physiology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Human Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Immunology, Pharmacology, Zoology, Environmental Sciences, Botany, Veterinary Sciences etc) and 30 in Social Sciences stream (like Psychology, Sociology, Home Science, Statistics, Anthropology, Social work & Health Economics).

Another 100 candidates would be selected for consideration for positions of JRF under various research schemes of ICMR (subject to fulfilling the conditions for appointment under the schemes) for the duration of that scheme. These JRFs would also be permitted to complete Ph.D. while working in the scheme, if enrolled.

The validity of result will be two years for placement in ICMR funded projects. The award of Junior Research Fellowship to the successful eligible candidates will depend on their finding placement in a Medical college /Hospital /University /National Laboratory /Institution of higher learning and research as applicable.

The candidates selected for the JRF programme of ICMR would be permitted to enroll themselves for the Ph.D. programme of any University recognised by the UGC/MCI. The validity of fellowship awarded to a candidate will be six months.

Applicant should hold an M.Sc/M.A or equivalent Degree with minimum 55% marks for General/OBC Candidates and 50% for the SC/ST & Physically Handicapped (PH) candidates in the subjects mentioned above. Those appearing in the final year examination in 2009-10, can also apply. The upper age limit for admission to the eligibility test is 28 years as on 30-09-2010 which is relaxable up to 5 years in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/PH/ female candidates and 3 years in the case of OBC.

The subject Specific Section (Section B & C) would pertain to (B) Life Sciences and (C) Social Sciences. A candidate may attempt questions in either of the two areas. Each area of section B & C would have 100 questions and the candidate may attempt any 75 questions in the predesigned area of Section B or C. Candidates are required to indicate the option for Section B or C in the application form too. Each question carries one mark. Negative marking @ 0.25 will be made for each of the wrong answer. The questions in both the sections would appear in English only. The qualifying marks will be 55% for General Category and OBC and 50% for SC/ST and physically handicapped.

Those satisfying one of the following three criteria may apply

(i) KVPY (Kishore Vaigyanic Protsahan Yojana): Students qualified in SA (2008)/SX(2009)/SB(2009)/SP (passed 10+2 in 2009/2010) (See http://www.iisc.ernet.in/kvpy)  

(ii) IIT-JEE 2010: Those obtaining a minimum of 60% marks in Class XII and securing a rank in the regular merit list.

The highest position that a navigating officer can expect to attain on board a merchant ship is that of the Master of the Ship (Captain), Marine Engineer to that of the Chief Engineer of the ship and in case of Polyvalent Officer to that of Master/Chief Engineer. IMU, Visakhapatnam Campus, prepares students for Design and Construction of Marine Crafts & Structures.Graduate students can find employment in Shipping, Shipbuilding, Ocean Engineering Industries, Indian Navy, DRDO and Classification Societies etc.

There are 185 seats available in T. S. Chanakya, Navi Mumbai, 246 in MERI-Kolkata, 46 in MERI-Mumbai, 80 in NMA-Chennai, and 40 seats in IMU, Visakhapatnam. There is no separate Entrance Examination for admission to these institutes. Admissions will be based on the results of the Joint Entrance Examination, 2010 conducted by IITs on 11.04.2010. Only those who have qualified in IIT-JEE 2010 are eligible for admission. Applicant must have passed (10 + 2) examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English. Applicant should have been born on or after 01.10.1985. Those belonging to SC/ST, born on or after 01.10.1980 are eligible to apply.

For those joining B. Tech. (Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering) Degree course, the physical standards are as required by regular engineering students. For other candidates, details of the medical standards specified are available in the Information Brochure. For joining B. Sc. (Nautical Science) Degree course & B. Sc. (Maritime Science) Degree course, normal vision of 6/6 is essential for each eye separately. Those wearing glasses will not be eligible for admission. For those joining B. Tech. (Marine Engineering) Degree course, glasses will be allowed up to plus or minus 2.5. Un-aided vision should be 6/12 in both eyes minimum or 6/9 in the good eye and 6/12 in the other eye at least. Candidates should be mentally & physically fit for sea life. On successful completion of the courses, the cadets will be eligible for entry to the Merchant Navy both in India and abroad, with attractive salaries and exciting career prospects.

Post Graduate Diploma Course in Thermal Power Plant Engineering (2010-11)

As per Mandatory requirements under Indian Electricity (Amendment) Rules, 1981


WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN? The main aim of the course is to develop a pool of technically trained manpower readily available for recruitment to the Indian Power Sector. Besides, the course shall enhance the knowledge and skills of the engineers sponsored by the State Electricity Boards, Power Utilities etc.

ABOUT THE COURSE: This is a modular course of one-year duration. Formal coaching is held at Regional Institutes of NPTI Located at 1. Nagpur (Maharashtra). 2. Badarpur (New Delhi) 3. Durgapur (WB) 4. Neyveli (TN) 5. Guwahati (Assam) and 6. Nangal (Punjab). On-job training is conducted at the nearby Thermal Power Stations and the training on state-of-the-art Simulator at NPTI Faridabad/Badarpur/Nagpur. The course profile covers the mandatory requirements under Indian Electricity Amendment Rules 1981, which stipulates "No person shall be authorized to operate or undertake maintenance of any part or whole of generating station of capacity 100 MW and above together with the associated sub-station unless he is adequately qualified and has undergone the specified training at a recognized Institute".
 
Eligibility: BTech / BE or equivalent in Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics / Power / Control and Instrumentation Engineering. Those appearing in their final year examination can also apply. However, they must submit their provisional degree at the time of counseling.

SELECTION CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION: Merit based on a Common Entrance Test (CET) result followed by counseling. CET will be held on 20/06/2010 at 8 centres (Faridabad, Badarpur, Nagpur, Durgapur, Neyveli, Bangalore, Guwahati and Nangal.)

AGE LIMIT: For non-sponsored candidates the age limit as on 31/08/2010 is 30 years. No age limit forthe sponsored candidates.

TOTAL SEATS: 340 Reservation for OBC/SC/ ST/ physically challenged as per Govt of India norms. 25% seats are reserved for candidates sponsored from Power Utilities having more than one year experience as on the date of counseling and more than 60% marks in Engineering Degree. Eligibility: Degree/Diploma in Engineering/tech. OR Any Degree from a recognized University(Art, Commerce, Science or equivalent) Flour Milling Technology OR City & Guilds Certificate in Flour Milling.

MSc (Food Technology)
Eligibility: Bachelor Degree in Science with Chemistry/Biochemistry as one of the subjects or Agriculture / Engineering / Technology. Mathematics as one of the subjects in Plus 2 or Pre University or at Degree level is compulsory for admission.

Minimum Qualification For Admission :
a. For Ph.D in Engineering:
i) Master's degree in Engineering/Technology in the relevant discipline with a first class or a minimum
of 60% marks/CGPA 6.5 on a 10 point scale in cases where the University/Institute does not award
any class
(or)
ii) Equivalent qualifications like M.Sc. (Engineering) / M.S. [By Research.]

b. For Integrated Ph.D in Engineering:
Bachelor's Students with outstanding academic record in the Bachelor's degree in engineering disciplines ofCivil, Mechanical, Computer, and Electrical & Electronics, with an aptitude towards advanced scientific and technological research are eligible to apply. A minimum of 80% marks or a CGPA of8.0 is the primary pre-requisite. Candidates who are appearing for the final examination can also apply provided they meet all the requirements before admission.

c. For M.S. (by Research) degree:
i) A Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology or Master's degree in Science or Master's degree in
Computer Applications (with Physics & Mathematics at Bachelor's level) with a first class or a minimum 60% marks/CGPA 6.5 on a 10 point scale in cases where the University/Institute does
not award any class.
ii) Associate membership of the following professional bodies with a pass in both Parts A & B with 60%
marks. (Such candidates are eligible for admission to M.S. (by research) Programme in their parent
discipline. Their eligibility for other disciplines will be decided on a case-to-case basis).

d. For Ph.D / M.Phil. in Sciences / Languages:
Master's degree in the relevant discipline of Science with a first class (or a minimum of 60% marks/CGPA 6.5 on a 10 point scale in cases where the University/ Institute does not award any class). However for Languages, a Master's degree with a minimum of 55% marks is essential.

Categories and Eligibility:
a. Internal Full Time Candidates:
A candidate who wishes to work for Ph.D / Integrated Ph.D / M.S. (By Research) / M.Phil. degree on full time basis (including project staff working in sponsored projects being carried out at the Institute) should apply in the prescribed form on or before the specified date.

b. Internal Part Time candidates:
All the staff members of the Institute having the requisite minimum qualifications can work on a part time basis for Ph.D / M.S. (by research) / M.Phil. degree.

c. External Part Time candidates:
Teachers working in other colleges in a permanent position and candidates sponsored by R&D organisations of following categories are eligible to apply to work on a part time basis for Ph.D /M.S.(By Research) / M.Phil. degree:
• Laboratories run by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research/ Department of Atomic Energy / Department of Space etc.
• Public Sector undertakings with R & D Units.
• Private Industries recognized by The Department of Scientific & Industrial Research Government of India as engaged in R&D work or contributing to R&D efforts. A copy of the certificate issued by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) in this regard will be required to be produced in such cases.
• Medical Industry, Institutions and Hospitals with approved R&D in the relevant area. (A copy of the certificate issued by the appropriate authority to be produced).
• Sponsoring Institutions/ Industries should be located within 500 km.
• Candidates fulfilling these criteria may apply in the prescribed form along wih NOC on or before the specified date.

d. International candidates:
Candidates of foreign nationality who hold Degrees from Indian Universities seeking admission to research programmes with the necessary clearance from the Government of India (The Ministry of Human Resource Development) and possess valid Visa will be treated on par with Indian nationals for purposes of admission to the Institute.

Foreign nationals with foreign degrees must meet the minimum educational requirements as given in Section 2. Their degrees must be equivalent to Indian degrees mentioned in Section 2 in Engineering/ Technology/ Science and they should have a good academic record. International Students are expected to have a good working knowledge of English. Candidates with valid GRE and TOEFL scores will be given preference. The case of each foreign applicant will be examined and direct admission will be offered purely on merit.

Selection Procedure :
The candidates, who satisfy the criteria prescribed, will be called for the written test (VITMEE) which will be conducted at selected centres across India. Candidates can choose an appropriate subject in VITMEE based on their background and their potential research interests. Based on the performance in VITMEE, those candidates who satisfy the prescribed criteria and who have also secured more than the cut off score would be called for a personal interview to assess the technical skills, research and analytical aptitude and communication skills of the candidates. Final selection will be based on the previous academic records and the performances in the written test and interview.

Issue of Application Forms
The Application Forms will be issued from 19-04-2010 to 25-05-2010.
The Main Brochure and the Information Brochure for the MCA / M.Tech./Research degree programmes, along with the necessary enclosures which include the application form and a printed self-addressed envelope, can be obtained against cash payment of Rs.900/- from the designated branches of the GPOs / HPOs as mentioned in the website: www.vit.ac.in and through online at www.vit.ac.in/vitmee2010

Candidates can obtain the application form from the VIT University at Vellore or from the Administrative Office, New No. 6, (Old No. W-73), Second Street (Opposite
Towers Club), Anna Nagar, Chennai-600040 (Phone: 044-42016555 / 65480555, Fax: 044-26222555), by handing over a Demand Draft for Rs. 900/- drawn in favour of "VIT University", payable at Vellore.

Candidates can also obtain the application form through post by sending a Demand Draft for Rs.900/-drawn in favour of "VIT University", payable at Vellore, with a covering letter addressed to "Admissions Officer", VIT University, Vellore-632014, requesting for the application form and indicating their complete postal address. On receipt of the DD, the application form with the enclosures will be sent by post. The postal charges will be borne by the Institute. Candidates should write their name and address on the reverse of the DD.
