Since it was established in the early part of the twentieth century, the College has had venerated gurus in music and dance on its faculty, and they haveshaped the way in which the arts are taught here Students live andstudy in simple surroundings closely connected to nature. Open spaces, spreading trees, buildings which are open to the light and the breeze, cultivate a spirit of reverence for learning and for the environment. India's most respected performers are among its many alumni. Most of the faculty at the institute today were themselves students of Kalakshetra and they cherish the ideals they learnt from their gurus, passing them on, in turn, to the students who come here to learn the traditional arts of Bharata Natyam and Carnatic Music. Kalakshetra offers Diploma courses in dance, music, instruments and fine arts and Post Diploma study in music and dance. The Director of Kalakshetra, Leela Samson, was herself a student of Rukmini Devi, and continues to be a performer and a teacher of the style she inherited from her guru. They are committed to preserving and sharing the values they absorbed and the purity and beauty of the dance and music style which has been central to their lives.
