Introduction: 
In today’s complex world, the needs of mankind are different and complex as well. The prime slogan of the era is the survival of the fittest. Thus the spectrum of human concern ranges from social problems like poverty, unemployment, inadequate health and education facility, to contemporary issues like global warming, civil unrest, urbanization, forced democracy and so on. In this context social work has been described as the profession that helps society to work better for people and helps people function better within society and maintains the equilibrium for the optimum social functioning. The essence of the profession is guided by the principle of human worth, dignity, acceptance, and propagates an equitable development mechanism for the entire human race.   

AIM:  To nurture and develop dynamic and competent social work professionals to address the challenges and concerns of the 21st century. A major thrust is to inculcate research aptitude, analytical ability, innovative programming, that facilitates changes at the level of policy formation, academic advancement and thrusting on development of models for social work practice in different sphere of human existence. 

Ph D in Social Work:   The Ph D programme in the Department of social work is to enhance the analytical ability and empirical models for social  work practice in different sectors of human development by using social work knowledge and skills. The programme encourage the social work professionals to think in the wider horizon of their area of interest and explore the possibilities of newer interventions and the dimensions that are yet to be understood in a cause-effect relationship. Therefore, the  Doctoral programme in Social Work enhances the capacity of the students for efficient leadership roles in social work education, social work research, social policy, planning, interventions, and administration. According to the aim of the program, the Ph D in social work is to provide students with advanced academic exposure that will allow them to contribute to the profession by  adding newer skills for upcoming areas of practice relevant in 21st century.

Master of Social work (MSW): Master of Social work (MSW) programme in GBU, designed to develop superior quality professional social workers in the field of Medical and Psychiatric Social work, Community Development, and Human Resource Management. The department of social work of GBU strives to provide high quality education based on a strong value foundation promotes ethical field work practice, research driven by global societal needs and implement unique interventions for inclusive development and in this process develop professionals who make a difference in the society.  

Structure of curriculum: MSW is two year programme in four semesters.  
The syllabus is designed  keeping in view the international standards and professional ethics that give wider understanding about the basic philosophy and values of social work profession, human rights perspective, the developmental needs, services for the people living at different cultural context to facilitate healthy living and well-being. The student would develop the knowledge and skills of working with diverse group  of population in various set-ups like, communities, schools, industries and hospitals. They would also have extensive field work practicum, training in social work practice learning laboratory and exposure visits to nurture and nourish their professional abilities.

Job prospect and future: There are ample job opportunities for MSW degree holders in both the government as well as non-governmental sectors. Opportunity in the governmental sector is mainly in the community development projects pertaining to health, education, rural development, child, woman and tribal welfare etc. Work in NGOs’ can be specific to either urban or rural area. Postgraduates in Social Work also have job opportunities in the industrial and corporate sector. Students opting social work as career may find job in child welfare and family service agencies for providing mental, health, medical, educational and correctional services. Some MSW degree holders can prefer to be self-employed by establishing their own NGOs. Globalization has widened the scope of employment for student opting for social work as their career. They may choose to join international NGOs like Amnesty International, Oxfam and Green Peace etc. New problems relating to environment has further forced social work to transgress its traditional limit. Now many NGOs and government agencies are working for environmental protection and conservation where people from social work background can find a good opportunity for professional growth. The MSW degree holders can also work in premier international organizations like WHO UNESCO and UNICEF etc.  Higher education and teaching is another option for Social Workers.
