Applications invited for Ph.D (Engineering) Programme for August 2013 Session for sponsored candidates
The CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML) is a premier establishment of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi. CSIR-NML pursues research in diverse areas ranging from mineral processing, extractive metallurgy, alloy/materials design and development, corrosion and surface engineering, computational materials science, structural integrity and remaining life assessment, life cycle assessment and cleaner and sustainable metals production.

It carries out R&D in the areas of:
Mineral Processing: Agglomeration, Coal & Iron Ore, Petrography.
Extractive Metallurgy: Hydro-Biometallurgy, Pyrometallurgy, Electrometallurgy, Process Modelling.
Surface Engineering: Corrosion, Tribology, Surface Modification.
Applied and Analytical Chemistry: Surface and Water Chemistry.
Materials Engineering and Evaluation: Physical and Mechanical Metallurgy, Alloy Development, Microstructural Characterization, Materials Mechanics, Metal Forming and Joining, Non-destructive Evaluation, Materials Modeling.

Advanced Materials and Processing: Nanomaterials, Magnetic Materials, Biomimetic and Biomaterials.
Energy & Environment: Waste Processing and Utilization, Metal Recycling, Life Cycle Assessment.

CSIR-NML is inviting applications from eligible candidates from public and private sector for admission to M. Tech / Ph.D. in Materials & Metallurgical Engg program under Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR), New Delhi, as sponsored students, in the ensuing session commencing from August 2013. 

Eligibility ( Sponsored Candidates)
A. Ph D (Engineering):
Experienced candidates working in industries, having a Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology in Metallurgical / Mineral / Chemical / Mechanical Engg or Materials Science and a good academic record are eligible for admission.
B. Integrated PhD (Engineering):
Candidates working in industries with a Bachelor degree in Engineering/Technology in Mineral / Chemical / Mechanical Engg or Materials Science with a good academic record from well-known universities/ institutes. They should have minimum two years industrial experience.
Hostel: All selected out-station candidates will be provided semi-furnished hostel and mess facility on payment basis.

Selection
Selection for admission shall be made through interview of short-listed candidates. The interview for selection will be conducted at CSIR-NML, Jamshedpur. No TA/DA shall be paid to candidates appearing for the interview.
Short-listed candidates will be required to produce a permission letter from their employer at the time of interview.
Course Work & Academic Requirements (Ph.D):
i). After enrollment, sponsored candidate shall be required to complete courses equivalent to 8 credits as a residential student for a semester ( approx. 04 months).
ii). Candidate shall be allowed to complete 8 credits related to Writing a Project Proposal, a Review Article and fulfilling the requirements of CSIR-800 as a nonresidential student
iii). Candidate shall only be allowed to take Comprehensive Examination after completing 8 credits of course work as a residential student.
iv) Completion of thesis.
(Total Duration: 4 years maximum extendable to 5 years).


Course Work & Academic Requirements Integrated PhD (Engineering)
Residential requirement is three semester followed by non residential course work and thesis.
